In 1908, the sport of football developed in the early days of the university's establishment.

In 1913, Tongji set up its first football team.

In 1915, it formed another two football teams.

In the second half of 1921, the club of civil engineering was established, together with Qihou, Yiyi and Chenshe football teams.

In 1936, football courses were officially opened.

In March 1947, Tongji Football Team won the championship of Shanghai College Football League.

In 1979, Tongji University was named as the first batch of schools with football as traditional sport in Shanghai.

In 1981, Tongji University began to set up its women's football team, which was a strong team among college women's football counterparts in China. The great reputation of the team lies in the fact that it won the National College Women's Football Championship in 2005 and 2007, and trained famous national team members such as Pu Wei, Yuan Fan, Pan Lina.

In 1985, Tongji University Football Team was awarded the "High-Level Sports Team" by the Ministry of Education.

In 1987, Tongji University Football Team won the championship of "Huangguoshu Cup", the first National College Football Championship.

In 1990, Tongji University established the Football Branch of FUSC with other universities, and served as affiliated unit of the first president.

In 2007, Tongji University held the first Asian University Men's Football Championship and won the championship.

In 2012, under the support of the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Education Commission, Tongji University took the lead to establish the "Shanghai School Football League", and served as the executive unit of president, devoting to the development of youth school football in Shanghai.

In 2013, Tongji University was re-elected as the affiliated unit of the President of the Football Branch of FUSC.

In May 2013, Tongji University established the Football Research Center, the first specialized institution for football research in colleges and universities nationwide.

In 2014, the Sino-British School Football Program was officially launched.

From January 23rd to November 25th, 2017, "2017 Sino-German Youth Football Research and Development Seminar" was held in Tongji University.

In June 2017, the International College of Football, Tongji University was established.

In 2017, teams from Tongji University won the championship of Men's Super Group and Women's First Group respectively in Shanghai School Football League.

In 2017, the second phase of the Sino-British School Football Program was held in the Sino-French Center of Tongji University.

On May 25, 2019, the Sino-German School Football League was established.
